What is contention and why is it important when choosing broadband?
Contention is one of the most important things you need to know about when choosing your broadband package and provider. Contention is the number of people sharing a single broadband connection and its bandwidth at any one time. Particularly at peak times, high levels of demand from one connection often mean slow unreliable speeds, constant buffering and drop outs at peak times. Unfortunately, many providers have high contention ratios because of the outdated copper-wire based networks they’re still using. Don’t be fooled by ‘fake fibre’ products also known as ‘Fibre-To-The-Cabinet’, as these use fibre cables to the cabinets then split them across multiple properties. They’re often oversold and under deliver.

The next step in our ultrafast journey
The Truespeed story began back in 2014 when our co-founder & CEO had a lightbulb moment. Fed up with slow, unreliable broadband in his rural Somerset village – and getting nowhere with the broadband giants who were focused on more lucrative areas – he decided to do something about it. And low and behold, Truespeed was born!
Right across the South West, it was a similar story, so we had an opportunity to do something and make a real difference. We launched with a Home 100Mbps product and focused on instantly giving customers in rural locations a huge uplift in broadband speed. This set them firmly in the digital fast lane, where they’d been constantly left behind for so many years by the bigger providers.
Tucked away in rural Somerset, Priston was the first lucky village to get the Truespeed treatment in 2015. After transforming daily life for the people of Priston, we didn’t stop there and have continued to roll out our brand-new full-fibre network to over 200 communities. We’re also setting our sights on city life too. The historic city of Wells now has some of the fastest broadband speeds in the world thanks to Truespeed! Which is why, with our eyes on the prize, now’s the perfect time to expand our ultrafast product range.
